MUSEUM EXHIBITS ASSISTANT-CARBON COUNTY MUSEUM

Principal Purpose of Job: Coordinates and develops exhibitions/events based on collections. All staff participates in collections management, basic preventative conservation, and visitor services functions. This position reports to Director.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

·        Communicate effectively with suppliers, facilities maintenance people, traveling exhibitions providers, other museums’ personnel, and any specialty services.

·        Train on Adobe Creative Suite 2 for PC (InDesign).

·        Handle/move artifacts and documents and inventory collections as per industry standards.

·        Establish and maintain effective, courteous, respectful, friendly, work relationships with coworkers, Director, visitors.

·        Research and apply effective display techniques.  Develop exhibit text along with other staff.  Produce graphics materials.

·        Travel for conferences, train in professional museum practice and procedure.

·        Research/write/administer exhibits grants. Maintain exhibits advertising schedules.

 

Qualifications

·        Keyboarding and computer skills in Word, Internet, some Photo/Video software knowledge desirable. Training in Art, Crafts, Display and/or Graphics preferred.  Beginner knowledge of standard business communications.

·        Excellent writing, grammar, verbal skills. Math/budgeting skills. Visual/Graphics communications desirable.  Communicate historical research for visitor queries.

·        Interest/Experience in History/Humanities/Arts.

·        Able and willing to lift/carry/move objects and materials, climb ladders, sufficient visual and hearing to respond to both verbal and written needs.

·        HS diploma/GED; strong preference for post-secondary education-A.A. or B.A/B.S., or any combination of training and experience equivalent to A.A. or B.A./B.S.  

·        Comfortable in small town environment and engaging the public. Bilingual welcome

 The Carbon County Museum is a small museum in Phase II of new museum planning.  Job description reflects general details as necessary to describe principal functions of this job, level of knowledge and skill typically required, and scope of responsibility and is not an all inclusive list of job requirements. Duties assigned in other functional areas to respond to public needs, to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or to otherwise balance the work load.  All employees required to open and close, orient and assist visitors, learn about museum, and give tours. Workers Compensation provided.  Employee must contract own healthcare with reimbursement negotiable after 1 year.

Six month probationary period.
